SISC DTV conversion AssistanceDate: 2/17/2009 Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Location: South Iredell Senior Center (View Map)
Description: A large majority of the television stations are converting to Digital Television on February 17th even though the DTV conversion has been extended until June 12. It is estimated that as many as 50% or more of stations will convert. This means that people still using an analog TV without a converter box will lose all of those stations. According to the FCC, all stations must have decided by Monday February 9th if they are going to switch to digital on February 17th or not. Only the national stations such as NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. have consented to dually broadcast until June 12th. All websites (www.dtv.gov www.dtv2009.gov www.dtvanswers.com etc.) and available materials are being updated with the new date. The deadline for applying and receiving coupons has been extended until July 31, 2009. The wait list for coupons as of yesterday was 4 million BUT 10 million “active” coupons have not been used and as they expire they will be released. No money has been released for more coupons. People with a TV in their home that works with the help of “rabbit ears” or a rooftop antenna should be aware of this change in broadcasting. If they receive free TV using an antenna and your TV is not digital, they need to take action so they can continue to receive programs. The digital transition will provide a viewing experience for consumers and help emergency responders protect your community. The Act created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to use their analog TVs after transition. The Federal government is offering US households up to two $40 coupons to help pay for the cost of a certified converter box. TVs connected to cable, satellite, or other pay services do not need a converter box to receive programs. If you need a converter box please complete a coupon application as soon as possible so that you are on the list to receive a coupon as soon as more are available. The South Iredell Senior Center provides the following assistance for senior adults:
- Individualized assessment to determine if you need a converter box
- Availability of on line computers
- Coupon applications and assistance in completing the application
- Transportation available for seniors who do not drive, so that they can get their converter box
(call 704-663-5112 to arrange transportation, a two day notice is required)
- Volunteers available to install your converter box
